"Our final standard for [the novelist] will have to be the demands of art,
which are a good deal more exacting than the demands of the Church.
There are novels a writer might write, and remain a good Catholic,
which his conscience as an artist would not allow him to perpetuate."

--Flannery O'Connor, Mystery and Manners (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1962)

New on our desks

The Truth About Harvard

Sure, Harvard is hard, but not in the way you might think. Writing in The Atlantic (March 2005), a recent Harvard graduate reflected on what was missing from his education. Ross Douthat observes that getting into Harvard was hard, and once there "it was hard work competing for offices and honors and extracurriculars with thousands of brilliant and driven young people; hard work keeping our heads in the swirling social world; hard work fighting for law-school slots and investment-banking jobs as college wound to a close . . . yes, all of that was heavy sledding. But the academics - - the academics were another story." [Read more]

The Embryo Question

Writers for The New Atlantis consider the question of destroying embryos for stem cell research. In their articles they set up parameters for the debate and examine the language employed in the discussion thus far. [Read more]

Spring Cleaning Sale

Despite our best efforts to accurately gauge how much of any particular cassette or CD we should duplicate, sometimes we overestimate. This means that we have too many of certain selections filling up our storage room, taking up limited space, and making end-of-the-year inventory counting rather tedious.

This also means you have the opportunity to pick up these items on the cheap. Through March 31, 2005 you may purchase selected MARS HILL AUDIO Journal back issues, Conversations, and other items (on cassette and CD) for up to 50% off the list price.

You may view the sale catalog online and place an order. You may also print a PDF order form and mail or fax it to us (see fax number and mailing address below).

Discussion Group update

MARS HILL AUDIO Journal-oriented discussion groups have been meeting on a regular basis in Washington, D.C., Pasadena, and Houston for a while now, and they are joined by a recently formed group in Boulder, Colorado. If you would like more information about one of these groups see our discussion group webpage. If you would like to have an existing discussion that we don't know about added to our webpage, or if you would like assistance in starting a discussion group in your area, drop us a line via e-mail.
