"[I]n our desire to impose form on the world and our lives we have lost the

capacity to see the form that is there; and in that lies not liberation but

alienation, the cutting off from things as they really are."

-- Colin E. Gunton, Enlightenment and Alienation: An Essay towards a Trinitarian Theology

"Medicine Goes to the Mall"

"Today it is seen as entirely fitting and proper for physicians to employ medical technology to remedy the social and psychological problems of stigma, alienation, and poor self-esteem." [Read more]

Favorite Newbery Medal Winners

On Volume 73 Patricia Owen discussed children's literature and winners of the Newbery Medal. She has also compiled a list of her favorite Newbery winners which we have made available online. Since it is not so easy to find (it is under "Literature, Children's" in our topical index) we have also made a link available on our homepage (www.marshillaudio.org).

"Cultural Apologetics"

"The term 'cultural apologetics' needs a little more explanation. Traditional apologetics is concerned with making arguments to defend Christian truth claims, and has often addressed challenges to Christian belief coming from philosophical and other more intellectual sources. The term 'cultural apologetics' has been used to refer to systematic efforts to advance the plausibility of Christian claims in light of the messages communicated through dominant cultural institutions, including films, popular music, literature, art, and the mass media. So while traditional apologists would critique the challenges to the Christian faith advanced in the writings of certain philosophers, cultural apologists might look instead at the soundbite philosophies embedded in the lyrics of popular songs, the plots of popular movies, or even the slogans in advertising ('Have It Your Way,' 'You Deserve a Break Today,' 'Just Do It')." This excerpt is from the Spring 2005 fundraising letter to our subscribers. You may read the entire fundraising letter from Ken Myers or make a contribution (or wait for it to show up in your mailbox any day now).

Narnia on Tour

With the anticipated release of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe this fall, one can expect an avalanche of publicity, action figures, and the like.

Nonetheless, one of the benefits of the movie is that, like Shadowlands a decade ago, it will draw attention to the life and work of C. S. Lewis. With the goal of fostering informed conversation about Lewis, his faith, imagination, and writing, the Matthew's House Project has organized Narnia on Tour, a series of Lewis-related events that will take place in various forums across the country beginning in September. Most events consist of a lecture and discussion time with a noted scholar (such as Ralph Wood, Bruce Edwards, or Dan Ritchie) but the Tour has also tied in with Wheaton College's Annual Writing and Literature Lecture Series  and the Northern Michigan C. S. Lewis Festival.

To find out if the Tour is coming to a city near you see the Narnia on Tour website for tour locations and dates. You can also find articles about Lewis (updated regularly), learn who was influenced by Lewis, and discover authors who write in a similar vein as he wrote. You also have the opportunity to be involved as a Tour road team member; to do so, contact the tour manager, Zach Kincaid (zkincaid@narniaontour.com).
