A monthly e-mail newsletter from MARS HILL AUDIO
October 2005 v Number 20
"We have a huge responsibility and an enormous privilege to live daily in such a way that we
give witness to the immense and sacred gifts of time and place. The good news of Jesus
Christ, 'the first-born of creation,' has its context in these Genesis-revealed gifts of time and
place. It is far too common in our fast-paced and technologically depersonalized society,
impatient and zealous to get out the gospel message, to skip the Genesis context and slap
together something improvisatory so that we can quickly get on with our urgent mission."
—Eugene Peterson, Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places: A Conversation in Spiritual Theology

Taking Care
Under the chairmanship of Leon Kass, a guest on multiple volumes of the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal, the President's Council on Bioethics produced in-depth studies of human cloning, biotechnology as therapy, human nature, stem cell research, reproductive biotechnologies, and alternative sources to human pluripotent stem cells. Its latest release, and the last report during Kass's tenure as chairman, is Taking Care: Ethical Caregiving in Our Aging Society. [Read more]

MARS HILL AUDIO Journal Update
Volume 75 (July/August 2005) has been sent out. A preview of this issue's guests is available on-line. And if you haven't done so already, you may want to try out the bonus track (scroll to the bottom of the page) or the hour-plus extended interview with Eugene Peterson, both on mp3.
Volume 76 (September/October 2005) is in the works, and if all goes well it'll be in the mail by the end of October. See preview of this issue's guests.
Looking for an 8-track version of the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal (in a paisley slipcase)?
Despite an abiding fondness for things old and analog, we won't be producing an 8-track (or vinyl) version of the Journal any time soon, though the idea has a certain appeal. But we do have quite a few items available on a medium that is passing but not yet dead, the cassette. We have deeply discounted many cassettes and several CDs; these are items that we simply overbought and are taking up scarce room in our storehouse. Included are back issues, Conversations, Reports, books on tape, and more.
(For those of you who have never ordered a back issue of the Journal before (or have not done so in a while) we encourage you to do so. Most of the interviews on the Journal are pretty timeless, which is to say they don't sound like old, stale news two, three, or even five years later. And for the next month it won't cost you much to find out that this is the case.)
If you have already placed orders with us, we thank you for your patience as we process far more than our usual number of orders. We apologize to those of you who've had trouble placing your orders on-line. We believe we've resolved some (but not yet all) of the problems related to our website. If you do run into a problem, it can often be solved by clicking on the "refresh" button on your browser. And you can always opt for placing your order with a real person by calling us at 1.800.331.6407 during business hours (9am to 5pm EST, Monday through Friday).
We encourage you to take a look at what we have available and complete your collection or get a jump on Christmas stocking-stuffers. And if you buy more than $10 worth of stuff we'll pay for shipping and handling to anywhere in the U.S. (Flat delivery charges of $2 and $6 will apply to Canadian and overseas addresses, respectively). See the on-line sale catalog for details.
mp3
To say that interest in a digital, downloadable version of the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal has been intense would be something of an understatement. You people won't stop pestering us!
All we can say for now is that it's on the way, and we really mean it. We anticipate beginning testing of the software that will handle on-line customer accounts within the next few weeks, and we hope to complete testing by the end of November. But given the pace of this project to date it may still be the new year before we can make this service available. So don't give up on your tape or CD subscription just yet. And keep in mind that we will allow subscribers to convert an existing subscription to a digital subscription. As for pricing, we haven't set it in stone yet, but it will be lower than the cassette version, (which is currently $36 for 6 issues).
In addition to the Journal, we intend to make many of our other programs available on mp3. In fact, as we convert our extensive Journal backlist and other audio programs to mp3 we've been making them available on mp3-CD for immediate purchase. For example, you can get an entire year's worth of the Journal on a single mp3-CD for just $29 (and this includes PDFs of the Listener's Guides). See this listing for our latest offerings.
We are also considering the creation of a periodic podcast (probably monthly). It will contain excerpts from interviews with guests to be featured in upcoming issues of the Journal, as well as occasional excerpts from interviews in our archives. Our podcast will also contain information about new resources (both audio and textual) which we have placed on-line. It will be freely available to anyone who wishes to listen, and should be a great way for you to introduce friends to the work of Mars Hill Audio.
