The Christian Mind of C. S. Lewis

a MARS HILL AUDIO Anthology

Christian World of C. S. Lewis by Clyde KilbyIn 1998, the centenary of C. S. Lewis’s birth, MARS HILL AUDIO celebrated the occasion by conducting a number of interviews with various scholars, all of whom are experts on Lewis and his works. A great deal of time has passed since then, but the value of these resources has not diminished. Thus, within this Anthology we have selected a variety of the recordings we have produced over the years, with the aim of presenting some of the highlights of the wide range of scholarship on Lewis.

Lewis once wrote that “Imagination is the organ of meaning,” and in the first section of this anthology, Ken Myers talks with Clyde Kilby, author of Christian World of C. S. Lewis (Eerdmans, 1964), about Lewis’s views on the formative role of imagination in the perception of reality. Lewis’s views on the imagination were linked to his ideas on reason, rationalism, and the order of the universe. This topic is discussed next with Michael Aeschliman, who expands on Lewis’s reasonable distrust of trusting reason too much.

Taste for the Other by Gilbert MeilaenderFollowing this, James Como sheds light upon the rhetorical techniques displayed within much of Lewis’s work, and Thomas Howard describes how Lewis skilfully used the peculiar anti-modern nature of the mythic genre in his lesser known retelling of the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche, Till We Have Faces. Subsequently, Gilbert Meilaender, author of Taste for the Other: The Social and Ethical Thought of C. S. Lewis (Eerdmans, 1998), discusses Lewis’s approach to apologetics and how his style differed from much of the work produced by his contemporaries. Finally, the anthology ends suitably with Alan Jacobs reading his essay entitled “Lewis at 100,” in which he comments upon the continued posthumous fame of the author and makes some insightful comments on his value to today’s readers.

The variety of topics covered within this selection of interviews and conversations provides a clear, comprehensive and coherent exploration of some of the major themes that Lewis himself explored. It is an ideal resource for any Lewis enthusiast who wishes to become more knowledgeable about the man who is arguably, the greatest Christian author of the 20th century.
