thoughts on "The Necessity of the Classics" In the Fall 2001 of The Intercollegiate Review, ISI published an essay by Louise Cowan titled "The Necessity of the Classics." In it Cowan explains that nobility and magnanimity are present in human nature, but are not naturally displayed if one's imagination is left unstirred. The classics, which "preserve the full range of human sensibility," train the imagination and elict "greatness of soul."  An audio version of the article is available here. [Posted March 2004, ALG] |
