biographical information



Bernard Lewis, Cleveland E. Dodge Professor of Near Eastern Studies, Emeritus, taught at the University of London and at Princeton. While he is interested in the contemporary Middle East, his major research interest is the history of the Ottoman Empire. He earned both his B.A. and Ph.D. (in the history of Islam) from the University of London, and has also studied at the University of Paris. He has written several books, including The Arabs in History, The Political Language of Islam, and Cultures in Conflict.
