John McWhorter, associate professor of linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, is a Manhattan Institute senior fellow in public policy studying race and ethnicity. He has written several books, including Losing the Race: Self-Sabotage in Black America and Spreading the Word: Languages and Dialects in America, and his articles are frequently published in—among other periodicals—The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. He earned his Ph.D. from Standford University and his B.A. from Rutgers University.
